The small community is ideal for children. The school classes are not too big. Flims is neither urban nor remote and thus offers the ideal infrastructure to meet all needs – and all this surrounded by nature in its purest form. The epitome of the perfect quality of life.
Three years ago, they purchased an undeveloped plot of land. As Bastian’s professional construction projects are highly time-consuming, the planning of their joint home took two years despite a pragmatic approach, followed by a year of construction. Both agree that the result is exactly the house they had imagined. When asked whether they would do anything differently today, Bastian answers, thoroughly relaxed, “No, and if so, we’d only tweak minor details.”
Architecture in harmony with nature
Bastian’s architectural style reflects his love of the mountains. Whenever he can convince the client (smiles), he chooses pure, raw natural materials that age gracefully. Vals stone, spruce and copper – untreated and surrounded by greenery. With this material concept and his excellent references, he immediately received approval for the building application.
Sustainability - not just a trend
Sustainability is a prerequisite for new buildings. The exterior walls were constructed using a combination of double-shell natural stone masonry and raw spruce formwork. The roof cladding consists of a photovoltaic system. For Bastian, the following applies: “If we’re talking PV, then complete and integrated.” The solar-generated electricity, with peak rates of an incredible 27 kilowatts, covers their entire energy needs, including heating and, in theory, two e-cars. An energy-plus house, equipped for the future. With an appropriate storage system, the house would be self-sufficient and would not need to be connected to the public electricity grid.
A passion for craftsmanship
His enthusiasm for natural materials and skilful craftsmanship led Bastian to Naturofloor and Faserit®. He recalls his first experience with Naturofloor. The site manager at the time advised him against this option, and recommended classic tiling. However, the client was prepared to take a risk. The result impressed everyone. Since then, Bastian has only used Naturofloor for seamless surfaces. The natural components, which are processed and applied by certified specialists, are clearly superior to an industrially produced, more economical alternative. The effect is much livelier. For the wet rooms in their house in Flims, he chose a sandy colour that creates a consistent optic when combined with the raw limestone washbasin. What was not discussed in the interview but must be mentioned nevertheless, is the unique “all black” bathing oasis. Black walls, black-stained spruce slats on the ceiling, black bathtub, black washbasin, black toilet – even the toilet paper is black. And even if you didn't know it, you would inevitably assume that this was the creation of an architect. Naturofloor knows no limits. Only curves have limits. For the sink in the laundry room, for example, Bastian used raw waste wood as a substructure for Naturofloor. This was also easy to implement. In their house in Flims, the walls are plastered with white Faserit®. He was one of the first users and can thus be called a Faserit® pioneer. So what’s so convincing about Faserit®? “It's incredibly hard, even though it’s just water, paper and glue.” Other advantages of the material include easy cleaning, which is limited to wiping with a damp cloth, and the uncomplicated repair of any damage, such as the correction of nail holes. In addition, Faserit® contributes to an optimum indoor climate as it contains no solvents, and impresses with its visual vibrancy, which is the result of skilful craftsmanship.
Light creates atmosphere
The atmosphere of a room is significantly influenced by light. Indirect light creates a cosy living atmosphere by dispensing with spotlights. Dimmable light switches allow you to play with the lighting mood. The Jauslins are not fans of classic on/off light switches – these would contradict the carefully chosen naturalness of their living ambience. Naturofloor reflects the different light influences and colour nuances, which is expressed in the incomparable vibrancy of the surface. Choosing the perfect, harmonious colour shades, especially in combination with natural stone, was not easy at first, but in the end, it worked perfectly – even in the wet rooms of the house.
Distinctiveness without dominating
The house’s unique character results from the building’s optimum integration within its surroundings, the deliberate interruption of the impact that a three-storey, white cube would have had, and the introduction of a kind of chalet character. In order to fulfil the living requirements of all family members, the Jauslin family opted to play with different levels. The property’s alignment and its use determined the shape and layout of the house. The garden was meant to face south and be directly accessible from the living room.
